This common rail V6 turbodiesel was developed by Audi, and first installed in the Audi D3 A8 in 2004. Subsequently made available for all longitudinal engined Audis, along with the same engine orientation in Volkswagen Passenger Cars 'premium' models and Volkswagen Marine applications.

Q7’eren var Audi’s første forsøg på at lave en SUV. Bilen er baseret på Audi Pikes Peak quattro, der blev præsenteret i 2003 på Detroit Motor Show. Q7 er baseret på platformen, samme platform som modellerne VW Touareg og Porsche Cayenne, og er bygget sammen med dem i Bratislava, Slovakiet.

Audi Q7 har permanent firehjulstræk (Quattro) med en fordeling på 40:60 (front: bagtil). Det er muligt at bestille Q7’en med en tredje sæderække, der er bygget til maksimalt 1,60 meter høje personer. Hvilket går det muligt at have syv sæder i Q7’en i modsætning til de standarde fem. Adgang til tredje sæderække er en smule besværligt, da sædet skal foldes væk. Man kan på bestilling få lavet den anden sæderække med to individuelle sæder, kombineret med en midterkonsol, hvilket reducere passager tallet til seks eller fire, afhængig af om tredje sæderække er tilvalgt eller ej.
Pga. den manglende reduktions gearkasse samt selvbærende karrosseri med uafhængig affjedring, er Q7 mindre egnet til hårde seriøst hårdt terræn, men igen hvor tit er det også lige disse biler bliver brugt til dette.
Audi Q7 er markant størrere end sine europæiske konkurrenter, herunder de tilhørende modeller af VW og Porsche med op til omkring 30 cm i forskel i længden.

Listen over ekstraudstyr til Q7, er nærmest uendelig, og omfatter bla. adaptive cruise control-systemer, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Adaptive Air Suspension Luftaffjedring, dynamisk kurvelys, Lane Change assistent, der advarer føreren, at kører uden for sin bane, samt biler der befinder sig i den blinde vinkel spejl (Side Assist). Der er også en valgfri parkerings hjælp, med kamera. Det Bakke sensorer er standardudstyr. Desuden er Q7 en af de første biler, der kan bruge en Bluetooth-biltelefon med SIM Access, i stedet for simpelt Bluetooth. Til Q7 V12 TDI er der mulighed for at bestille kulstof-keramiske bremser.

Den 10. November 2005 blev tildelt Q7, det gyldne rat i klassen af SUV'er. I læsernes 'meningsmåling, omkring de bedste biler i 2006 bladet Auto, Motor und Sport, kom Q7 på andenpladsen i sin klasse.
