Undervogn

Brake assignment
Througout this assignment, i am going to explain the different aspects of both disc, and drum brakes. Including advantages and disadvantages of both systems.
The most common type of brakes on later model cars, is disc brakes. The most important advantage of discbrakes, is the brakinking capabilities. All brakes work by using friction between an object spinning with the wheels, and a brakepad solidly mountet on the car. When the pads come in to contact with the rotor or the drum, the friction createt in turn creates heat. If the the teperature gets to high, the brake will start to loose their function. This is known as brake fade. Discbrakes is less prown to fading, because they can disperce the heat much faster and more efficient than drumbrakes. This is partly do to the fact, that disc brakes are extrely mountet, so there is more air flowing around them. Some discs even have airpassages in between the disc surphases, wich make the cooling even more efficient. Partly do to the fact, that there is simply more braking surface on disc brakes.
Drum brakes is an inclosed system, wich means that the pads are on the inside of a drum, not on the outside like a disc. This makes cooling the brakes harder, wich in turn leads to more brake fade and decresed braking power. This is why drum brakes is usually only used in the rear of the vehicle, where .... .. But drums also last longer than discs, and they are cheaper to produce and replace. Another major advantage for using drum brakes, is the integration of a parking brake. On a drum brake the parking brake can be activatet by a simple lever, that presses the pads out toward the drum. On a disc brake this system becomes much more complicated and expensive to design and manufactor. So there is advantages and disadvantages of both systems. But do to the increesing size and power of modern cars, drum brakes are slowly beeing outfaded.
Regardless of a car uses drum or disc brakes, the system that applies the brakes uses a special hydraulic fluid, called brakefluid. When the brakepedal is applied, the fluid is pressed through a brake booster and brake lines out to the brakecaliper or wheelcylinder, wich in turn forces the pads towards the drum or the rotor. Since the brake system is one of the most important safetyfactors in a vehicle, the fluid used in the system must be of very high standards. Brakefluid is different from other fluids, because it is non compressable, and because of its high boilingpoint.
The most commonly used classification of brakefluid is set by the American Department of transportation, or DOT. DOT is followed by a number, for example DOT 4. The higher the number, the higher the boiling point. The higher the boilingpoint is, the higher temperatures the brakes can run at efficiently. Some brakefluids will absorbe moisture, wich will dilute the brakefluid and lower the boilingpoint.
ABS, or anti blocking system, is a system that allows for brakes to only be applied on the wheels with the most grip, and that controle the braking of the wheels in a such way that the wheels dont block. On vehicles with ABS, there is a sensor on each wheel that detects if the wheel is spinning or blocking. If the system sences that a wheel is blocking, it will release some of the brake preassure on this wheel allowing it to spin in order to find more grip. This means that the wheels will never completely block, wich makes braking faster and much more controleable.
ESP or ESC stands for Electronic stability program, or Electronic stability controle. It is a system that works via the ABS to help keep the car from skidding. The system detects skidding in the wheels, compares it to movement in the steeringwheel, and then applies the brakes where needed to help minimize the skidding and regain controle. Some ESP/ESC systems also reduce engine power to help the driver regain controle.
