Tow vehicle {{forumTopicSubject}}

Hi,

I'm looking to find an older vehicle to be used for towing trailers full of house building equipment, and hopefully project cars in due time...

My understanding is that vehicles over 35 years pay 75% less tax - does that sound about right? If so then I think I'd be looking for something of that age!

For finding it, there are two options - find one in Denmark and purchase it (high chance of it being on yellow plates, so expensive to change over to white plates) without any importing troubles. Are there any good sites where older pickup trucks, or SUV's are found?

The second option is to find a suitable one elsewhere and import it. I'd guess I could get a late 70's pickup for under €4000 - any guesses on what the import charge would be?

Any thoughts or advice on this? All help is much appreciated!

#2   8. feb 2015 So there is no cost for converting from yellow to white if it was registered before 1998? That's good to know thanks.

Was I right on the tax reduction for cars over 35 years?

  • #3   8. feb 2015 Well, I think the best place to start your hunt would be in Sweden, since there are alot of US cars over there, also try some of the Danish US Forums or users, perhaps.

  • #5   8. feb 2015 Sorry for asking, but where are your origins from?

#7   8. feb 2015 Kim P - is there a site you can suggest that would give more details on that? I wasn't planning driving it too much, but I would want to be able to drive it all year.

  • #8   8. feb 2015 I´d go for the import.
Importing a car that´s older than 35y, shouldn't be to expensive. (sure, it depends on what price range, the cars within, but you do mention spending about 4000€), so should be fair.

The advantage of importing a car from somewhere more southern is first of all - rust!
Denmark is a wet country, our cars are rusty, and finding a rust-free 70´s pickup in Denmark in good shape, wont come cheap...

of course - sweden ain´t no dry country - so if you plan on getting a car from sweden, i don´t see that big a difference other than having a bigger US market in Sweden, and probably more people doing custom and stuff..

  • #9   8. feb 2015 Well, case closed then smiley ! Get one in a hurry over there, before you're moving to denmark.

#11   8. feb 2015 Thanks for the input guys.

A few of whats available on Blocket at the moment have swapped out engines - is that likely to affect the import? As long as it's safe, do the inspectors care about things like that?

#12   8. feb 2015 AFILI8ED - Nice low purchase price, but it'd cost over 10.000DKK a year to tax since it's not that old yet.

    https://www.skat.dk/SKAT.aspx?oId=1817286

Good solution for the short term, but I'm hoping to hang around a while!

I have my eye on this as an example - http://www.blocket.se/varmland/Jeep_cherokee_td_4wd_ev_byte_58645629.htm?ca=15&w=3
I just don't want to buy it and find out that they won't let me import it, and then have to sell it again!

  • #13   8. feb 2015 I´m not sure, but ya, I don´t think that you can get a Custom US car registration, in the Danish System, saidly

#18   8. feb 2015 Is the skat.dk site I linked not right then? A pre-'97 diesel with Partikelfilter that weighs 1425kg seems to come out at 10.160 per year?

  • #20   8. feb 2015 Older cars are going under Vægtafgift which is paid one time a year aslong as its a van.

In this case with the transporter are one of these too.

    2.001 2.500 kg. 3.680 1.400 0 5.080 5.080
    2.501 3.000 kg. 4.410 1.590 0 6.000 6.000

#21   8. feb 2015 Ok, if I'm reading it right the 3250kr is for vans/light trucks used fully commercially. It does say something about "That is to say: the same charge for private and commercial use, if the van is reg. The first time by the second juni1998".

Google translate is confusing me a little here - is it basically giving the commercial rate and then saying that it'd be the same for private use if it's registered before June '98?

  • #34   9. feb 2015 Well, not being able to drive a 35years old "veteranbil" all year long is not true.
There are difference in getting a classic car to "syn" (MOT) and register it as a "classic car" (veteranbil) to get 8years betweem syn, hvem it is 40years old, but when the car turns 35, it automatically goes on 25% vægtafgift.
But then there is the insurance, wich sets a lot of terms, to get a cheaper insurance, because of it being a vintage car, and therefore not beinge driven, as a dailydriver/to work etc. and not driving more than 6000km a year.
But you CAN drive it, in the wintertime!
The misunderstanding people gets with the "veteranbil" forsikring is that the "kasko forsikring" is only covering in the summer months, not winter, so in the summer, yoo get your car refunded if you crash it into a ditch or a tree, but if you crash into a tree or a ditch in winter time, its of your own pocket, (unless another person rams into you off course.)
But a "veteran forsikring" of a 35 year old vehicle is not that big a deal, if you have a house and is older than 25 and havent had any damages, then for example my car costs 2500dkr as a dailydriver on normal terms, but as a classic with all the regulations (cant take it to work, or use it as a dailydriver, needs to TOTALLY! original, and you have to have a car on the side also) then it sill cost me 1250 perhaps.

#35   9. feb 2015 Cawdy KN Customs - Thanks very much for the update. Sounds like the restrictions of registering and insuring it as a classic/veteran car are probably too tight, but the saving of 75% tax will make it still worth looking at older vehicles. So basically anything over 35 years old that still passes syn and can pull a decent load will be on the shopping list!

  • #36   9. feb 2015 Well vehicles, that is +35years old and have syn and number plates, is probably going to cost more than a similar 20-15 year old is going to cost in vægtafgift, as long it's yellow plates and before 97,where there is a "envy tax" for new yellow plate private "cars",then it will be a limited amount you are gonna pay in vægtafgift.
Especially if it's gasoline, because diesel is 2-3x the vægtafgift of a gasoline pickup.
For example, my 95 Mitsubishi L200 diesel, did cost me around 5000 kr a year.
    But I'm now making a 93 Chevy S10 4wd that's similar, but with a 4.3 Astro v6 gasoline, wich will cost me 2500 a year!
I might have it for sale if it's a 4x4 pickup you are after.
